The 22-year-old left Ibrox in the summer to join the English League One side on a season-long loan.
But Millers boss Paul Warne hopes to take the midfielder into England’s second tier.
Docherty has contributed seven goals and five assists so far this season for the Shrews and he hopes his form will see him welcomed back into Steven Gerrard’s plans next season.
Steven Davis has joined on loan from Southampton until the summer and he has already expressed his desire to make his Gers move permanent.

Docherty said: “Rangers seem to be quite happy with my progress and the last thing they want is for me not to be playing, so if I keep developing down here they will be happy.
“With everything going on at the club – the win over Celtic, players like Davis and Jermain Defoe coming in – of course I was thinking it’d be great to be back involved in that this month but I’ve got to think about what’s best for me in the long term.
