Arsenal star Granit Xhaka and wife Leonita love Camden Town met while working at Borussia Monchengladbach

GRANIT XHAKA has been hugely impressive in Arsenal’s brilliant 10-game winning run.
And the midfielder has been backed by a familiar sight in the stands: his wife Leonita.

Instagram @leonitaxhaka2 The couple were engaged in June 2016 and married in July 2017[/caption]
The stunning 26-year-old has been with Granit since meeting during his time at Borussia Monchengladbach.
Leonita, like Granit, comes from a Kosovo-Albanian family and worked at the German club – although it’s not known in what capacity she was working.
The couple were engaged in June 2016 after two years together and tied the knot at a ceremony in July 2017.
It’s not clear where the lavish day took place but Xhaka certainly caught the eye in an electric blue suit.

Instagram @leonitaxhaka2 The couple live in Barnet, but love spending time in Camden Town[/caption]
Leonita wore a stunning white dress with a long train that extended more than 6ft.
Not a huge amount is known about Leonita.
There are conflicting reports about where she grew up, although she is said to have been born in Albania.
Leonita is said to have spent her early life in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, before her family moved somewhere in the Ruhr, Germany.

The brunette moved to London with Granit, who grew up in Switzerland, when he joined Arsenal for £30million in 2016.
The Xhakas have a home in Barnet, north London, but Arsenal fans might just catch them in Camden Town – their favourite part of London.
Xhaka told the Guardian last year: “I feel a connection to Camden that takes me back to my childhood.
“When Taulant (brother) and I were kids, we had our first trip on a bus from Basel to Pristina so that we could visit our grandparents for the first time.

Tony Hibbert: Before he retired, the Everton legend bought a carp fishing lake in France

THERE’S nothing fishy about this.
Tony Hibbert is best remembered by Everton fans for galloping down the right wing as an attacking full back that played 329 times for the Toffees.
Tony Hibbert now owns a fishery in FranceInstagram @lacdepremiere
The fact that he failed to hit the back of the net at the club he was with for 18 years also made him the butt of Evertonians’ jokes.
But it was a hobby outside of football that led to him thinking about building a life outside the game.
In 2013, Hibbert bought the 33-acre Lac de Premiere, a carp fishery in the village of Villiers-en-Prayeres, northern France.
And since retiring from the beautiful game in 2016, he’s devoted his time in running a venue welcoming fisherman from all over the world.
Lac de Premiere was bought by Hibbert in 2013Instagram @lacdepremiere
It boasts stunning lakes, some of the finest fish and facilitiesInstagram @lacdepremiere
Lac de Premiere boasts some of the finest fish and facilities you could possibly wish for, including decked out pegs, an 80-seater restaurant, sports bar and shower block.
For up to £550 a week, guests can fish from two lakes, and that price includes food, although you’ll have to bring your own tent to stay.
The Main Lake is where all the action is and boasts fish that weigh around 60lb. As for the lake record, that stands at a whopping 67lb.
Some of Hibbert’s football pals have already enjoyed his lakes, including Birmingham City keeper David Stockdale.

Since retiring Hibbert has concentrated on running the fisheryInstagram @lacdepremiere
Guests pay up to £550 a week to stay at Lac de PremiereInstagram @lacdepremiere
Back in 2013, Hibbert told the Angling Times why he bought a fishery.
“Being a fisherman myself, I think it’s something any fisherman would like to own – their own carp fishery, or a fishery in a way,” he said.

SUCK IT UP Leeds flop Tomas Brolin quit football at 28 to sell vacuum cleaners – and has been loving retirement

“I just think, coming to the end of my career, I need something.
“And as a business venture I’m happy with it and it’s something I enjoy, so why not?”

Hibbert set up the business with partner Keith GladdenInstagram @lacdepremiere
So dedicated to getting it right, Hibbery along with business partner Keith Gladden search low and high for the perfect spot, which took time.
“I was looking in France for over a year,” he revealed.
“Me and Keith had seen a lot of venues, but I think this one, when we first saw it, was the one for us.”
Hibbert got into fishing when he was a kid, first catching a perch when he used to visit Prescot, Merseyside with his mates.

“It was with me mates, just going round to the local ponds and learning to fish,” he said.
“The first fish (I caught) was a perch in a local club water in Prescot.
“It’s where we went most weekends to fish.”
Footballers including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero have admitted a fondness for fishing in the past.

He believes that players are beginning to admit they love fishingInstagram @lacdepremiere
Hibbert believes that players are now starting to admit their love for angling.
“I think at the moment a lot of people are coming out more and saying they go fishing.
“I think a few years back, they kept it to themselves. But now they’re getting more confident and they are enjoying it more.
“It’s getting bigger and bigger and they’ve cottoned on more so they’re not afraid to say that they fish.”

As for his favourite style of carp fishing, Hibbert said he favoured on particular way.
“Setting traps for them,” he said.
“Trying to get as much as a bite off them as I can and taking it from there, really.
“If it needs chasing, I will go round and chase them, but setting little traps and getting as many bites as I can.”

Premier League transfers will soon be done via Bitcoin but experts warn that transparency could get even worse

BITCOIN will be used to sign a Premier League player within the next few months.
That is the prediction from a major global investment platform involved in football.
Premier League transfers could soon be made using bitcoin
However, experts are warning that if it’s not careful the English game could be entering a dangerous and unregulated world – and it could suffer the consequences if it moves too quickly.
Bitcoin is an alternative, virtual currency that can be used to make payments directly between people or companies.
Bitcoin and others like it are known as cryptocurrencies, or ‘cryptos’.
They are seen by many as the future of finance because they do away with all the limitations of transferring money using a bank, such as delays or currency charges.
Getty – Contributor Bitcoin is seen as the future of banking – but transparency may be lost[/caption]
Every transaction is recorded in a public ledger, known as a blockchain.
Football has been gradually getting involved in blockchain technology, which can be used in a variety of ways.
So far in football the focus has been on bringing supporters closer to their clubs, and the trend has started to accelerate over the last couple of months.
In September blockchain platform Socios.com unveiled partnerships with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Juventus.
Reuters Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s Paris Saint-Germain joined a partnership with blockchain[/caption]
Fans of both clubs will be able to buy a digital currency called chiliZ and exchange it for Fan Tokens which can be used to vote on club matters such as the team kit.
Then on October 8 it was announced that the Hull City Supporters’ Trust had launched a £45m bid along with the blockchain-based crowdfunding company SportyCo to buy the club from owner Assem Allam.
It was reported that the consortium planned to raise extra funds by launching their own cryptocurrency – Hull City Coin – which fans would use to purchase match tickets and merchandise.
Meanwhile, West Brom striker and former Wales star Hal Robson-Kanu is co-founder of Sports Ledger (SPSL), an innovative platform due to be rolled out next year that features blockchain technology.
Getty Images – Getty Hull City Supporters’ Trust tried to buy the club from Assem Allam using bitcoin[/caption]
Users will be able to exchange SPSL tokens for extra insight into the physical performance of top players, for instance.
As for football transfers, Turkish amateur club Harunustaspor signed a new player using bitcoin in January.
It paid the player 0.0524 in bitcoin (£384.12 at the time) and 2,500 Turkish lira (£467.30).
Harunustaspor claim to be the first football club to have paid for a player with cryptocurrency.
And at the top level of the professional game, the use of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin to sign players might not be far away, according to global investment platform eToro.
Getty – Contributor Hal Robson-Kanu is co-founder of a company that uses blockchain[/caption]
The company, which enables users to invest in cryptoassets, launched partnerships with seven Premier League clubs earlier this season: Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Newcastle United, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
Each club is promoting eToro, which in return has paid them for the deal in bitcoin.
Iqbal V. Gandham, UK managing director at eToro, told SunSport that the clubs have been keen to explore all the opportunities of blockchain technology.
These could include clamping down on ticket touting, guaranteeing the authenticity of merchandise, and – most significant of all – buying new players with bitcoin.
Twitter/TurkishFutbol1 Turkish amateur club Harunustaspor signed a new player using bitcoin in January[/caption]
“I do feel that within about six to twelve months we will see a player transfer in the Premier League completed using bitcoin,” says Gandham.
He points to numerous benefits, including instantaneous payments, which could help clubs avoid issues on deadline day, for example.
He claims that other advantages include the use of a single currency for international transfers, and greater transparency.
Clubs could make the details of transfers public by simply revealing the wallet addresses (the bitcoin equivalent of bank accounts) involved – including those of the agents.

Gary Wright, CEO and founder of finance think tank B.I.S.S. Research and an expert in financial innovation, agrees that a top flight player could be transferred using bitcoin within the next year.
He told SunSport that cryptos could help clubs avoid issues around the third party ownership of players, for instance.
However, he believes that bitcoin would not make the transfer market more transparent – in fact he says that at the moment it could have the opposite effect.
“Currently, if you do a player transfer in a traditional currency [such as GBP], then that money has to go through a central clearing agency, such as the FA,” he explains.

“They see the money, and there’s some transparency in that they see the agents’ fees. Although they can’t stop it, they can actually see what’s going on. With bitcoin, they wouldn’t see that.”
So with Aaron Ramsey possibly leaving Arsenal in January and Mauro Icardi linked with a move to Chelsea, could bitcoin be used to get them there?
Gandham concedes that with bitcoin you can only see the flow of money involved if you know what the wallet addresses are.
But he believes that clubs may choose to reveal those details, especially for the biggest deals, to show to fans what is going on.
“At many clubs, there seems to be a growing distance between the supporters and the owners,” he says.
Getty – Contributor Aaron Ramsey could leave Arsenal in January and bitcoin could be used[/caption]
“The clubs need to regain that trust and bridge that gap again, and I think this is one way of doing it.
“Blockchain technology makes it very easy for them to show the details of player transfers to supporters.
“For example, if you go to a website called blockchain.info, there you can explore anybody’s wallet.
“A club might want to set up a separate wallet for each transfer, for instance.”
But Wright warns that before clubs start paying transfer fees in bitcoin, it is vital that the football authorities like the FA and the Premier League get to grips with it.
AFP or licensors Mauro Icardi could be on his way to Chelsea in January – bitcoin might be used to get him there[/caption]
“With bitcoin and the blockchain, it’s like the wild west out there,” he says.
“The good is being mixed up with the not so good.
“There is still an underlying fear that bitcoin is used for nefarious activities – money laundering and the like.”
He adds that the volatility in the value of bitcoin makes it “highly risky.”

Emmanuel Adebayor car collection: £360,000 Rolls-Royce and £18,000 Can-Am Spyder just some of amazing fleet of luxury motors

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR’S car collection quite simply leaves all others biting the dust.
And it is his customised Rolls-Royce Phantom that steals the show, not least because of its price tag.
Emmanuel Adebayor has an – as expected – outrageous car collection
The one-of-a-kind motor starts at an eye-popping £360,000 – but that does not take into account its orange paint job and matching interior.
And there is the personalised number plate – 0004 SEA – a reference to his shirt number and initials, Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor.
No wonder that alongside one image of him at the wheel of the car he wrote: “Love my lifestyle.”
Former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Spurs star Adebayor, who now plays for Istanbul Basksehir in Turkey, boasts an amazing array of motors which he keeps safely under cover at a custom-built hangar at his huge home in Accra, Ghana.

The interior matches the orange outside of the flash motorInstagram / @e_adebayor
One photo shows Adebayor apparently fast asleep with his cavalcade stretched out behind him as far as the eye could see.
The Roller took pride of place in that photo but it is his £18,000 Can-Am Spyder trike which is probably his weirdest vehicle.
The futuristic three-wheeler boasts 115hp and electronic cruise control.
It looks ideal for a quick trip down to the shops.
The Istanbul star catches 40 winks by a long line of his carsInstagram / @e_adebayor

But for that, Adebayor uses his souped-up Mercedes-Benz people carrier.
The motor features leather La-Z-Boy seating, curtains on the windows, an arm rest between the back two chairs and stands for his phone and iPad.
Smiling happily inside for one photo, Adebayor captioned the snap: “On my way to town for some quick shopping.”
Should he fancy something different then the Togo star can whip out his Mercedes-Benz G65 SUV, which starts from around £170,000.

It was reported that in 2012 the former Real Madrid striker gave away a Range Rover – said to be worth six figures – to his close mate and comedian Funny Face.
This year for his birthday, Adebayor told his pal that he could have pretty much whatever he wanted.

Amine Gulse: Mesut Ozil’s fiancee is a model, actress and former Miss Turkey 2014

TO be Mesut Ozil.
There’s no doubt about the Arsenal playmaker’s talent – he is supremely gifted on the ball.
Amine is the stunning fiancee of Mesut Ozil
While earning £350k a week, he’s definitely a high-roller after signing a a three year contract with the Gunners back in February.
And it’s not as if he’s suffering off the pitch either.
This year, the former German international got engaged to his stunning girlfriend, Amine Gulse – in what’s capped a remarkable 2018 for the No. 10 (forgetting THAT World Cup exit).
Gulse, 25, is a star in her own right, winning Miss Turkey 2014 and later representing her country that same year in the Miss World beauty pageant.

Gulse won the Miss Turkey beauty pageant in 2014
Ozil met Gulse four years ago
Gulse was born and raised in Sweden to a Iraqi Turkmen father and Turkish mother
The 25-year-old stunner also appeared in Miss World in 2014
However, she was originally born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden by a Iraqi Turkmen father and Turkish mother.
The blue eyed brunette then moved to Istanbul, where she began scoring regular model work.

AGAINST THE LAW West Ham striker Javier Hernandez’s girlfriend Sarah Kohan is a law graduate who counts ‘being naked’ as one of her favourite things

It was in 2014 when she got her big break – competing and winning the Miss Turkey pageant.
Her gorgeous looks weren’t enough to persuade Miss World judges to give her a placing in their competition in Las Vegas, but it was enough to make her a star in her own country.

Aside from modelling, Gulse also is an actress
A brunette with blue eyes, Gulse is stunning
And Gulse is also tall – standing at 5’10”
Gulse got her big break in acting starring in popular Turkish TV drama Asla Vazgeçme
Gulse met Ozil, 30, that same year and he was instantly smitten.
Still modeling and shooting a variety of fashion campaigns, the 5’10” stunner has also branched out into acting.
She starred in popular TV Asla Vazgeçmem – a drama about love in which she played the lead female role from 2015.
But, for the moment, their romance is believed to be long-distance, with Gulse dividing her time between Istanbul and London for work commitments.

Thank you for your birthday wishes yesterday So grateful for each and every one of them! #M1Ö #30years #thankful #danke #teşekkür #terimakasih #obrigado #gracias #grazie #merci pic.twitter.com/GWadLoqj38

However, because of work commitments Gulse lives in Istanbul
She regularly embarks on a four hour flight to see her beau Ozil though
Ozil is believed to have popped the question back in March
Gulse regularly shares sexy selfies with her 1.7m Instagram followers
When Ozil quit international football, Gulse was one of the first people to support the German’s decision

Tottenham youngster Oliver Skipp is following in Eric Dier’s footsteps and Christian Eriksen raves about him

WHEN an injury crisis struck Tottenham’s team ahead of Barcelona’s visit to London earlier this month, Mauricio Pochettino had no hesitation in turning to youth.
Pochettino is known for exactly that: giving youth a chance, polishing potential until it shines — and 18-year-old Oliver Skipp is next on the production line.

Defensive midfielder Skipp watched from the substitutes’ bench as Lionel Messi tore through Tottenham at Wembley in another dazzling performance.
In the team that night was Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies and Harry Winks — all of which Pochettino has progressed.
Skipp’s opportunity to watch from the sidelines came due to the absence of midfielders Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.
The latter is a BIG fan of Skipp.

Getty – Contributor Skipp has shown a courageousness when in the first-team squad, Eriksen said[/caption]

After a handful of academy players trained with the first-team in pre-season, Eriksen said: “All of the young players have really shown great character.
“A lot of them have trained with us a few times, guys like Luke Amos and Anthony Georgiou.
“But I think the guy who’s the youngest is probably Skippy, who’s really taken the game in his hands and is trying to do his thing. He’s been very good.”
Eriksen believes Skipp, who has played for England Under-18s, Under-17s and Under-16s, has the character to become a big star.
“First of all, his courage,” the Dane said. “He is not scared to get the ball, he is not scared to go forward and he is not scared to tackle.

Getty – Contributor He is a versatile midfielder who can also play centre-back[/caption]
“He’s an all-round midfielder. And I think with a lot of training, as he gets older, he will be there.”
Skipp is taking a giant leap at Tottenham.
Last season, he was the star in the Under-18s team and was expected to make the natural transition to Under-23s – but his promotion has been swift.
In August, he was rewarded with a professional contract that runs until 2021 with Spurs likening Skipp to Eric Dier.
Academy boss John McDermott said: “Oliver Skipp has shown guile and quality in possession but also a real desire and toughness out of possession.”

The cameo in the first team squad against Barca clearly gave Skipp even more confidence.
In a 4-0 win against Gillingham in the Checkatrade Trophy, the versatile midfielder captained the team.
He started as the defensive screen in midfield before roaming forward and setting the tempo for the third goal, before finishing the game in a back-three.
Pochettino knows potential when he sees it, and it won’t be long before this youngster takes a hop, Skipp and jump into the first-team.

Ex Manchester City star Nigel de Jong owns an incredible car showroom that sells Lamborghinis and Ferraris to the rich and famous

NIGEL DE JONG isn’t your average footballer.
Combative on the pitch, he was a nightmare to play against – just ask Xabi Alonso who was on the wrong end of his infamous 2010 World Cup final karate kick tackle.
Nigel de Jong co-owns a car showroom called Continental CarsInstagram
But off it, that brutish nature he had while playing for clubs including Hamburg, Man City and AC Milan perhaps belies his intelligence.
While he was a youth player at Ajax, de Jong, 33, considered a life after football and graduated with an Economics degree.
Then, during his time in Germany, he co-founded Continental Cars – an incredible showroom full of the world’s most expensive cars in 2007.
The garage has got everything from Lamborghini Aventadors, several Bentley Continental GT and GTCs, Wiesmanns, Maseratis, as well as a Ferrari F430.

Based in Hamburg, Continental Cars was set up in 2007Instagram
The most incredible supercars are available to buy in the showroomInstagram
From Ferraris to Bentleys, de Jong sells only the best cars in the worldInstagram
The likes of Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski are said to have visited the showroomInstagram
So it’s no wonder the likes of Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski are said to be customers.
“I have a degree in economics,” he told Joe.

MOUR GAS Jose Mourinho’s cars: Manchester United manager owns Jaguar F-Pace and Bentley, loves rallying but hates driving in England

“My mother always said ‘football is only part of your life, you have to develop yourself beyond that’ and I felt it was vital for me to do something for myself that wasn’t related to it.
“Besides being a professional player, I had the dream of owning a company and when I had the money and the expertise, I made it happen.”

Nigel de Jong’s following a family tradition in selling carsInstagram
His grandfather was a CEO for Ford in HollandInstagram
A £160k Ferrari F430 proudly sits in the Continental Cars showroomInstagram
And selling cars is something that certainly runs in the family.
He continued: “My grandfather was one of the CEOs of Ford in Holland and I saw closely how he developed himself as a businessman.
“He was always on time, making sure payments were never late, paying attention to service and giving customers extra, always making sure the company and his family was stable.
“I looked up to him, and off the pitch, I wanted to be like him. I also think his professionalism is something I carried with me as a footballer too.
Thinking about a life after football has always been part of de Jong’s plansGetty Images – Getty
As a player, de Jong was nicknamed The LawnmowerGetty – Contributor
But it’s amazing cars that rev his engine nowInstagram
Thanks to his earnings, de Jong has the financial resources to build a stellar car businessInstagram
“God gave me the talent and the strength to become a football player, which gave me the financial resources and empowerment to improve in other areas.
“I think it’s so important for football players to be smart with what they do with their salaries, because it can become an investment or be gone before you know it.
“It is very tempting in our industry to live for now – to buy the expensive cars and live a flashy lifestyle – but you have to plan so you’re able to do that in future too.
“This is an education players should get from a very early age to help them deal with the money they’ll make.”
Continental Cars also sell expensive motors to Gulf state oil sheikhsInstagram
Range Rover is always one of the most popular cars among the jet setInstagram
In an interview last year with Voetbal International, de Jong spoke about his impressive client list that includes footballers and some Gulf state oil sheikhs.
“Of course many footballers know where to find us,” he said.
“But also business people, collectors, and we just have to work hard for it, it’s not that we’ve had success for ten years.
“We were faced with the financial crisis when we came out.”

“Some people say footballers are thick and not bright enough to be entrepreneurs,” De Jong told Bundesliga.com.

Roy McDonough: Britian’s wildest footballer was a lothario that scored on and off the field and loved a drink

ROY McDONOUGH certainly lived to up his nickname as “Britain’s wildest footballer”.
On the pitch, the former Birmingham, Chelsea, Colchester and Southend striker scored 150 goals in 650 games over the course of 18 years.
Roy McDonough battled with football’s hard men throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s
Yet he is fondly remembered as a cult hero for his bloody battles with football’s hardest men.
Off it, he was a true lothario, sleeping with different women every week.
And his motto after every game was simple: “Win or lose, on the booze!
“No f***** is going to outdrink me!” McDonough, 59, used to say.

His tally of 22 red cards remains a record in English football
Scoring in the bedroom…
With his long hair and moustache, McDonough was dubbed the “German Porn Star” by Birmingham teammates. “It was a nickname I did my very best to live up to,” he says.
In his incredibly honest autobiography, McDonough claims he slept with 400 women, including orgies with fellow teammates.

BIG JAN Jan Molby: Liverpool’s midfield maestro did time, was crowned an honorary scouser and beat Eric Bristow at darts

Twice he had to seek medical attention after contracting sexually transmitted diseases gonorrhoea and then crabs.
His most famous conquest was “pulling a Miss UK finalist Christine Houghton with half a pint of larger and £1 petrol money.”
McDonough was a real ladies man and claims to have slept with 400 women
During one 18-month period, while locked in a loveless marriage to his first wife Jackie, McDonough reckons he slept with at least 39 girls.
He says his “failure to keep my trousers zipped up” was a curse inherited from his dad, who was “a terrible womaniser.”
His chat-ups lines weren’t exactly subtle…
McDonough says his “pulling technique had a 95% success rate” and only a few times was he told to “f*** off” for his brashness with the opposite sex.
He says: “I’d patrol the club like a kid in a candy store, picking out whatever sweet little thing I fancied tasting, before ruthlessly moving in for the kill, telling them what we were going to do, and where we were going to do it.
The striker played against the famous Dutch maestro Johan Cruyff at Stamford Bridge
“I’d say: ‘When we get in luv, I’m going to look after you downstairs, then all hell is going to break loose.’
“Alternatively, I could be really classy and ask: ‘So, how many times do you want to c*** tonight, darling?’”
Sometimes, when he was hungover, he’d give his “moustache a quick lick in the morning to find out if I’d done the deed.”
Marriages and divorces…
McDonough married his on-off girlfriend Jackie in June 1988, which he says was “built on lust, not love”.
‘Britain’s wildest footballer’ was not afraid to stick his head where he would hurt
McDonough’s extramarital affair was expoised by The Sun on page seven on August 30, 1995
She was the daughter of developer Gordon Parker, who later became the Colchester chairman.
But his affair with Lizzie, the club groundsman’s wife, only became public knowledge in August 1995.
The story appeared on page seven of The Sun under the headline: ‘Roy of the Ravers – Soccer boss runs off with his wife’s lookalike best pal.’
Despite the scandal, Lizzie ended up being his true love – “my guardian angel,” he said. The sleeping around stopped.
Scoring from the spot against Peter Shilton’s Derby in League Cup in 1987 for Southend
World Cup winners…
Interestingly, McDonough played under three England World Cup winners: Sir Alf Ramsey (at Birmingham), Sir Geoff Hurst (at Chelsea) and Bobby Moore (at Southend).
He held the utmost respect for his hero Moore during their one season together at Roots Hall.
His most prized possession was a match programme in which Moore praised McDonough for his “effort, endeavour and work he puts in for his teammates”.
Having an early bath…
McDonough was sent off a record 22 TIMES.
Playing against Chelsea’s Glenn Hoddle in a friendly at Colchester
His autobiography, which is available in paperback, is one of the honest sports book on the market
McDonough was not afraid to speak his mind and slam ex-pros Tony Pulis and Vinnie Jones in his book
His first red card was received for throttling one-handed the referee…of his local secondary SCHOOL cup final.
His moments of rage saw him receive plenty of suspensions, club fines and trips to Lancaster Gate for a dressing-down from the FA bigwigs.
Taking on football’s hard men…
For McDonough, it was a badge of honour to put his head where it hurt against the warriors of the era.
Graeme Souness was “the hardest player ever to walk the earth.”
Fellow Liverpool enforcer Tommy Smith “was built like Fred Flintstone and had a Frankenstein head, covered in battle scars.”
McDonough was never afraid to swear or try to intimidate a referee
Yet he had little time for Tony Pulis. “Pathetic, a little f****** squirt,” he called him.
As for Vinnie Jones, McDonough said: “Not hard in my book or brave. He was just a bully who never had the bottle to do things face-to-face.”
Boozing it up…
McDonough spent most nights “f***** out of my brains”.
He could easily drink 10 pints a night. His personal record was 18 pints of Stella.
His party piece was downing a pint in seven seconds upside down.
Remarkably, he often drove home despite being blind drunk and yet never had an accident.
Only once was he caught by police. He was just short of being of three times the legal 35mcg drink-driving limit – for which he received a 30-month driving ban.
He guided non-league Colchester United to the league and cup double in 1991-92
Winning the FA Trophy at Wembley…
McDonough’s crowning glory was achieving the 1991-92 league and cup double as a player/manager of non-league Colchester.
They won the Conference with 94 points, 19 home wins, and scored 123 goals in all competitions.
Then they beat Witton Albion 3-1 at Wembley in the FA Trophy final – with their shirts proudly sponsored by The Sun.
He recalls: “As I looked across that sea of blue and white, I thought, ‘The drunken clown didn’t do too badly, did he?’”

He lives in Spain now and is happily married with Lizzie.
