There is constant debate about the “official” UFC fighter rankings, which are based on voting from a panel of journalists.  Such is the case with something as subjective as voting – it’s totally based on voter’s opinion, and biases are bound to seep through, whether intentional or no.  So to try to put a fresh, objective, data-driven spin on rankings, The MMA Manifesto has come up with a performance based ranking system, solely based on how a fighter has performed in the cage.  Next up: The Women’s Strawweights

*stipulations: 1) any fighter currently suspended or 2) inactive for at least 12 months (without an upcoming fight scheduled) are excluded from the rankings

Scoring based on a fighter’s past 10 UFC performances (we use a seven year time limit, so if they have fought less than 10 times in past seven years, only the fights within that time frame are counted)
Points based on a fighter’s opponent’s UFC win/loss record (ie strength of schedule – the more successful a vanquished opponent is, the more points awarded), extra points given for finishes, extra points given for title fight wins.
Points are weighed so most recent fights are worth more (ie most recent fight counts the most, 10th most recent fight the least)
No points awarded for a loss

(first column performance based ranking, second column is official UFC ranking from UFC.com)

2018 UFC Fighter Salaries – Complete List

Oct 6, 2018; Las Vegas, NV, USA; Khabib Nurmagomedov (red gloves) fights Conor McGregor (blue gloves) during UFC 229 at T-Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports
Another memorable year in mixed martial arts is in the books, so it’s time for The MMA Manifesto to look back and reflect on UFC Fighter Salaries.
Was 2018 a good year financially to be a fighter?  Well, that depends on what your name is.  If it is Conor McGregor, then yes, it was a very good year.  On the other hand, if you happen to be Jin Soo Son, you might want to consider keeping your day job. The average UFC fighter made $138,250 in 2017, up from an average earnings of $132,109 in 2017.
A few more stats that you might find interesting:
– The average household income in the U.S. is around $45,000 per year, yet over a third of the UFC’s fighters (213 fighters – 37%). Sometimes it doesn’t pay to get punched in the face.
– 187 fighters (33%) earned six-figures in 2017 (34% in 2017).
– 15 men and women wore UFC championship belts (including interim) in 2018, and they earned an average of $783,400 (up from $666,643 in 2017) over the course of the year (highest – Khabib Nurmagomedov: $2,570,000; lowest – Henry Cejudo: $180,000).  Most of these fighters also made much more money in undisclosed pay-per-view bonuses.
– The highest earning non-UFC champion in 2018 was Conor McGregor, who pulled in a cool $3,030,000.

Now, for the salary results.  It is worth noting that these are only the reported salaries plus Fight of the Night & Performance of the Night bonuses that have been made public, along with Reebok payouts (now called fight week incentive pay).  Many top performing fighters get additional bonuses paid out to them that aren’t reported, plus the top guys get a cut of the pay-per-view buys for events that they headline.  Also, many athletic commissions don’t report fighter’s salary info, so for those we’ve estimated a fighter’s purse based on what they have earned in their other recent fights.  Fighters with some estimated purses are marked with a * in the database.  This data should still be considered very close to accurate, as most fighters’ purses remain rather steady from fight to fight (unless they ink a new contract in the meantime).
So, without further ado, here’s the salary of each UFC fighter for 2018.  To check out 2010’s fighter salary info click here, for 2011 click here, for 2012 click here, for 2013 click here, for 2014 click here, here for 2015, here for 2016, and here for 2017. There is constant debate about fighter rankings, which are normally based on voting from a panel of journalists.  Such is the case with something as subjective as voting – it’s totally based on voter’s opinion, and biases are bound to seep through, whether intentional or no.  So to try to put a fresh, objective, data-driven spin on rankings, The MMA Manifesto has come up with a performance based ranking system, solely based on how a fighter has performed in the cage, this time for Invicta FC.  We’ll roll out a new weight class every Tuesday. Next up: Flyweights.

*stipulations: 1) any fighter currently suspended or 2) inactive for at least 12 months (without an upcoming fight scheduled) are excluded from the rankings

Scoring based on a fighter’s past 10 Bellator performances (we use a seven year time limit, so if they have fought less than 10 times in past seven years, only the fights within that time frame are counted. For fighters who have also fought in the UFC, Bellator and/or Strikeforce during this time, those performances were counted also)
Points based on a fighter’s opponent’s Bellator & UFC win/loss record (ie strength of schedule – the more successful a vanquished opponent is, the more points awarded), extra points given for finishes, extra points given for title fight wins.
Points are weighed so most recent fights are worth more (ie most recent fight counts the most, 10th most recent fight the least)
No points awarded for a loss

Jon Jones Drug Test Abnormality Causes UFC 232 To Be Moved to L.A.

Category : MMA Manifesto

You can always count on Jonny ‘Bones’ Jones to keep things interesting.  Well, our boy, once again, hasn’t let us down on that front.  An “abnormality” in a recent drug test of his has caused the UFC to move next Saturday’s UFC 232 from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.
Jones was found, once again, to have a trace amount of turinabol (steroid, bro) in his system, causing the Nevada Athletic Commission to not license him to fight on Saturday.  This is their official statement on the matter:
Today, Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) Executive Director Bob Bennett announced that, in consultation with NSAC Commission Chair Anthony Marnell, III, unarmed combatant Jon Jones will be allowed to withdraw his pending application for licensure, which was intended to clear him to fight in a major contest in Nevada later this month.
After extensive analysis of Mr. Jones’ prior 18 months of USADA in- and out-of-competition anti-doping drug testing results, Director Bennett, Chair Marnell, and Mr. Jones agree that he will appear at an evidentiary hearing in January.  This will allow for a measured, thoughtful, and comprehensive discussion of his anti-doping testing protocol and results and provide an opportunity for the NSAC to determine the appropriate path forward for him in Nevada.  We look forward to his hearing.

Apparently the California State Athletic Commission has no such qualms and are willing to license him for his title fight against Alexander Gustafsson.  And the UFC’s “golden snitch”, Jeff Novitzky, is claiming that this test abnormality is being caused by a “pulsing effect” (whatever that means), and not by Jones ingesting the steroid again.
So, on less than a week’s notice, the event will be moved to The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Hope you didn’t have flights and hotels booked for Vegas.

The Livest Dog at UFC China: Alistair Overeem

Category : MMA Manifesto , Updates

PHOENIX, AZ – DECEMBER 13: Alistair Overeem reacts after his ko victory over Stefan Struve (not pictured) in their heavyweight bout during the UFC Fight Night event at the at U.S. Airways Center on December 13, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Name: Alistair Overeem
Opponent: Sergey Pavlovich
Odds: +115 (bet $100 to win $115)
I know what you’re thinking; Overeem is an underdog against a debuting fighter?
He is indeed here. There is certainly good reason too. Pavlovich is a talented Greco-Roman wrestler with powerful hands. He comes to the UFC with a 12-0 record and looking virtually unbeatable. Compare that to Overeem, who enters having dropped two straight by violent knockout (to both headliners), and it seems pretty clear why the odds sit where they do.
However, what people are forgetting is just how good Overeem’s wrestling is. While he is known for his kickboxing, his ability to dictate where the fight takes place is well above average. If he forces Pavlovich to box with him, we could see the return of “The Reem”.

2018 Totals
Record: 15-17
Earnings (based on $100 bet/event): $695
Return on Investment: 22%
