Rumored Reason Why WWE Decided To Turn Rusev Heel Again

Similar to the fan reaction of Daniel Bryan during the WrestleMania 30 “B-plus player” angle, the advent of “Rusev Day” caused a widespread phenomenon in the world of pro wrestling. Although he started stating the everyday is Rusev Day while being a villain, the fans were still into the fad, and crowds around the world started chanting “Rusev Day” when the Bulgarian Brute came to the ring.
While there were many times where WWE attempted to halt this organic movement, fans continued to give deafening Rusev Day chants in every arena. This level of popularity led to an opportunity to win the United States Championship at WrestleMania 34. Although he was unsuccessful, his popularity led to a WWE Championship opportunity just three months later against AJ Styles at Extreme Rules, but he was once again unsuccessful.
Over the past few months, Rusev has been engaged in a feud against then-United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. Despite a couple of failed attempts, Rusev was able to defeat Nakamura on the December 25, 2018 episode of SmackDown Live, winning the U.S. Championship for the third time in his career.

Unfortunately, for Rusev, he lost the title to Nakamura during the kickoff show of the Royal Rumble.
During the latest episode of SmackDown Live, an odd turn of events occurred. After R-Truth defeated Nakamura to commence his second WWE United States Championship reign, Rusev came out and cut a heel promo on the new champion, challenging him to a match. Following R-Truth’s successful defense, Rusev aligned with his foe, Nakamura, and attacked R-Truth. This heel turn from Rusev was totally unexpected, especially since he has been a very popular name on the SmackDown Live roster.

RelatedBackstage News On If AEW Has Interest In Signing Dean Ambrose, Could Ambrose's WWE Departure Be A Work?
To explain why this occurred, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer theorized why WWE decided to make the decision.
“The whole ‘Rusev Day’ wasn’t [WWE’s] idea, though. It was just something that caught on and made him a babyface. I think in their minds, the babyface thing was a short-term thing, and now [it has] run it’s course… he wasn’t that over as a face anymore.”

As seen on SmackDown Live, Rusev was called out by Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson for what they did to R-Truth. Nakamura stepped in and evened out the playing field, stating, “challenged accepted.” Rusev agreed to team with Nakamura, and a match is slated to occur between the two teams.

WWE Star Paige Has Altercation With Fan During 'UFC 232' Event

Former SmackDown General Manager Paige was recently involved in a Twitter exchange over a situation that happened at the UFC 232 event in Inglewood, California.
Paige and her boyfriend were in attendance at the event when evidently, someone witnessed a fan asking for an autograph That person was apparently told no, which led to the witness taking her case to social media.
Though the original Tweet has since been deleted, screenshots of it still exist online.
Photo: Twitter
That Tweet started a chain reaction and the user in question was forced to answer for herself to one fan after another. She did relent and admit that Paige was not the one to refuse the autograph. She also said that Paige was not rude, it was actually her boyfriend that came off in that fashion.

RelatedLOOK: Photos Of Film Based On WWE 'SmackDown' GM Paige
But as the Twitter conversation progressed, Paige suddenly became the villain by proxy. Supposedly since her boyfriend was rude, Paige was guilty by association.
Paige was fully aware of what was being said and did respond.

Jeez lady. Let it go. It’s wild how you’re the ONLY person out of the hundreds of people who came up to me that night who has a complaint. Solidified that I had a great reason to say no to you. It’s “fans” like you that makes people not wanna give your entitled ass a pic.
— PAIGE (@RealPaigeWWE) January 3, 2019

The assertion that Paige should “always be on duty” is surely a bit frustrating for many fans. But some would say it’s indicative of today’s social media culture, which centers on complete openness and interpersonal connections among users. Evidently, Paige is required to acknowledge the fans despite what she’s doing or why.
Paige took serious issue with that notion.

always on duty huh? So what happens when i have to use the restroom? What happens if I’m having a bad day personally? What happens if I’m in the middle of eating? Etc. I have to stop what I’m doing make sure rude people like yourself get a pic? I’ll take pics w/ anyone. Not YOU.
— PAIGE (@RealPaigeWWE) January 3, 2019

Though Paige is no longer in the General Manager role, she is expected to still be used in some capacity on TV. The McMahon Family recently took full control of both Monday Night Raw and Smackdown Live, which essentially rendered Paige’s storyline job unnecessary.

Paige is still in the fold, though it’s unclear how WWE will use here from here. Fighting With My Family, the biopic about Paige’s life and journey to WWE, is scheduled for U.S. release on February 14.

The first names confirmed for both Rumble matches were R-Truth and Carmella, when each Superstar earned the right to enter the matches at the coveted number thirty spots after winning season two of the WWE Mixed Match Challenge.

Major Update On Whether Braun Strowman Will Compete At 'WWE TLC'

Braun Strowman, unfortunately, had his momentum thwarted due to being forced to have surgery on his elbow. Along with knee issues, reported by the Wrestling Observer, Strowman needed some time to recover from nagging injuries, which was why he was written off by being attacked by Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre, and Bobby Lashley.
As of now, Strowman is booked to compete against Corbin at the TLC pay-per-view this Sunday. If Strowman wins, he will compete against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble. However, if Corbin wins, he will be the permanent General Manager of the Raw brand.

RelatedHuge Injury Update On WWE Star Braun Strowman
Although Strowman is still out recovering from injury, WWE is still promoting his TLC match against Corbin.

The stakes are HIGH for both Superstars as @BraunStrowman battles #GeneralManager-Elect @BaronCorbinWWE THIS SUNDAY at #WWETLC! #RAW
— WWE (@WWE) December 11, 2018

Despite promoting Strowman for TLC, it does appear that he will be competing. According to WrestleVotes, Strowman most likely will not be competing against Corbin at the show.
“Braun Strowman is still not likely to compete Sunday at TLC. So much so, that on the holiday tours, John Cena will wrestle in his place. Strowman will still appear at the holiday tour shows, just won’t work. So I can’t see him working a TLC match.”

The countdown to my return and your end starts now. #TickTock
— Braun Strowman (@BraunStrowman) November 28, 2018

Although Cena is not confirmed to make a surprise appearance at TLC, he is scheduled to return on December 26 and will be competing on non-televised events until his next film, which he will start airing in Vancouver on January 20.
As promoted on Raw, Corbin is expecting to win by forfeit and become the permanent GM. However, with Vince McMahon appearing on Raw, there could be some interesting scenarios that come out of TLC. With Strowman likely out, Corbin either could actually win by forfeit, or someone else could come in the stead of Strowman and defeat Corbin. This could lead to Vince firing Corbin on Raw and doing the Superstar Shake-up on the show.

WWE Reacts To Conor McGregor Offering To Provide 'Back Up' For Current WWE Champion

For years, fans of both MMA and WWE have felt that UFC Superstar Conor McGregor would be a great fit for the Squared Circle if he ever decided to transition from The Octagon. The outspoken Irish-born McGregor has been likened to great pro wrestling heels of the past, and much like Ronda Rousey, might be a welcome addition to the WWE roster.
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have both made public statements in recent years making it clear Conor McGregor has an open invitation to test out his skills in a pro wrestling ring, and earlier this week the “Notorious” one had WWE fans buzzing when he issued a Tweet to fellow countryman and WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, which prompted the following social media exchange.

Call me when you need Proper back up.
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) November 22, 2018

Cheers, Conor. I’m carrying two divisions at the moment, but you know exactly how that is. I hear New York is nice in the spring, though.
— The Man (@BeckyLynchWWE) November 22, 2018 even picked up on the Twitter banter between the WWE and UFC greats, writing, “it looks like Becky Lynch has an ally in fellow countryman Conor McGregor.
“The SmackDown Women’s Champion responded to an article comparing her meteoric rise to McGregor, boasting “The Man channels no one” and that she would break their Irish bond (and his arm) if their paths should happen to cross.

RelatedSteve Austin And More WWE Stars Comment On Shocking Conor McGregor 'UFC 229' Loss And Chaotic Aftermath
“Lynch, who’s had absolutely no issues holding her own as champion, then thanked McGregor for his offer and mentioned “New York is nice in the spring,” alluding to the fact that WrestleMania 35 will be hosted at MetLife Stadium in the New York/New Jersey region.
“Should The Man ever team up with “The Notorious” somewhere down the line, we fully expect to witness the internet’s collective head exploding.”
Photo: Per Haljestam-USA TODAY Sports
As for McGregor possibly making an appearance at WrestleMania 35, while the temptation might be there on McGregor’s part, he remains under contract with UFC, so he would need to get permission to make any type of WWE related appearance. It’s possible UFC could allow him to participate at the event similar to the way Ronda Rousey participated alongside The Rock at WrestleMania 31, however, it is unlikely the MMA juggernaut would allow McGregor to compete in a match.

BREAKING: Major Title Change And Heel Turn On WWE 'Smackdown' Forces Change To 'Survivor Series' Match

The final stop on the road to WWE Survivor Series certainly provided a newsworthy two hours, as this week’s Smackdown Live featured the announcement of two major PPV match changes following the events which transpired on the show.
As noted, Becky Lynch suffered an injury during the invasion angle on Raw this week, and WWE confirmed on Smackdown that the Women’s Champion suffered a “broken face” and will not be competing against Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series as planned. In Lynch’s place facing the Raw Women’s Champion will be former Smackdown Women’s Champion and Lynch foe Charlotte Flair.

The second major event which transpired on WWE Smackdown tonight left many fans puzzled heading into Survivor Series. It was announced earlier in the night that Daniel Bryan would be challenging AJ Styles for the WWE Title in the main event of the show, and the bout was indeed action-packed, akin to the last title match the two had prior to WWE Crown Jewel.

RelatedRumored Dream Opponent For AJ Styles At WWE 'WrestleMania 35'
Much to the surprise of the fans in St. Louis, Bryan was able to successfully defeat AJ Styles for the Title to become the new WWE Champion.
The title change has major Survivor Series implications, as Bryan will now be facing The Beast and Universal Champion Brock Lesnar in a Champion vs Champion match at the PPV on Sunday night. Going into Smackdown Live this week, the bout was set to feature Lesnar vs Styles.
Photo: WWE
Despite all that occurred on Smackdown tonight, the WWE Title change was not the final surprise in store for fans, as Daniel Bryan appeared to turn heel on AJ Styles following his title win. The end of the show tonight saw Bryan pummel Styles in a post-match beatdown before standing tall over his downed opponent with his newly won WWE Title hoisted high above his head.
Following the events which transpired on Smackdown this week, below is the updated and likely final card for WWE Survivor Series taking place this Sunday night in Los Angeles.
-Universal Champion Brock Lesnar vs. WWE Champion Daniel Bryan
-Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair
-Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins vs. United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura
Women’s 5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match:
-Team Smackdown (Carmella, Asuka, Naomi, Sonya Deville and TBA) vs Team Raw (Mickie James, Natalya, Ruby Riott, Nia Jax and Tamina, with Team Captain Alexa Bliss)
Men’s 5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match:
-Team Smackdown (Shane McMahon, Rey Mysterio, Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe and The Miz) vs Team Raw (Finn Balor, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and Braun Strowman)
